Dell CEO signs Supercomputer agreement at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº

Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell, visited ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº yesterday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº President and Provost Professor Malcolm Grant, sealing a research and technology partnership that will involve the creation of a cutting-edge High Performance Computing (HPC) facility for the university's 16,000 researchers.

The facility will be known as Legion and will have the strength of 2,700 desktop systems. Fourteen 'Grand Challenge' projects from across the university have been lined up to draw on this unprecedented computing power in Legion's first month following its launch due in December this year. A stable production service is expected to be available to the wider ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº research community by the middle of January 2008.

Legion has been financed by the Science Research Infrastructure Fund and will be housed within the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Education and Information Support Division's main data centre.
