¹û¶³Ó°Ôº notes with regret the death of Colonel Frederick Bonnart, who established the Frederick Bonnart-Braunthal Scholarship at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº.

Colonel Bonnart was the Editorial Director of NATO's Nations, an independent military journal and was formerly the European Community Correspondent for 'The Times' and a journalist specialising in international security.

In 2000/2001, attracted by ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's excellence and liberal reputation, he established the scholarship. Now up to two are awarded annually, aimed at tackling the causes and consequences of intolerance, and intended for students who plan to explore the nature of religious, racial and cultural prejudices and to find ways of combating them.

Francesca Fabbri was awarded the first scholarship. At the time a ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Economics PhD student, Francesca's thesis examined the welfare of ethnic-minority immigrants in the UK. She met and kept in touch with Colonel Bonnart, describing him as "an exceptional person".

Professor Michael Worton, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Vice-Provost (Academic & International), said: "Freddy Bonnart was a great friend to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. The scholarships which he founded, with their focus on finding ways to reduce intolerance, are now an important part of ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's actions to promote a sense of social justice in our students. Freddy's visits to ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº were always marked by his enthusiasm for the excellent work our students are doing and by his own great integrity and far-sighted vision."
