Bookings are open for the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Health & Society Summer School, from 30 June-4 July 2008.

The school is for both people who work in the field of public health and who may want to refresh their knowledge of population health, and people who are investigating a career in public health or associated subjects.

The five-day course includes options in:

• Social Determinants of Health, such as class, work, gender, ethnicity, area effects and health, life-course approach to social epidemiology, the Russian mortality crisis and social-biological translation
• International Health, such as global-health patterns, international socio-economic development, international and in-country health, inequality (child mortality), globalisation and health, architecture of international health, governance and health, and health systems and fragile states.

Professor Sir Michael Marmot (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Epidemiology & Public Health), Chair of the WHO Commission of Social Determinates of Health, will open the summer school with a presentation on the social determinants of health and close the week with a lecture and discussion on national - since the Black Report - and international policy development.

The week's programme also includes a public panel discussion on 'Obesity: What Hope for Change?' - with Professor Tim Lang (City University), Professor Jane Wardle (Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº), Martin McKee (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and Phil James (International Obesity Task Force) - and a guest lecture by Professor Richard Wilkinson (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Epidemiology & Public Health) on 'Relative Deprivation and Income Inequality'.
