Between 14 and 17 million people die each year due to infectious diseases, and the major burden of this mortality is felt in developing countries. Infections are also a major cause of disability, and social and economic disruption for millions of people.

A wide range of disciplines addressing infection - basic laboratory science, diagnostics, clinical trials, epidemiology, statistical and behavioural science - are strongly represented at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Global Health aims to build on this strength by developing an Infectious Diseases 'theme', encouraging debate and stimulating new interdisciplinary collaborations to provide solutions to, or to open up new areas of enquiry related to, infectious diseases.

The ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Instiute for Global Health therefore is inviting ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº researchers, whose work focuses, on or relates to, all aspects of infectious diseases to a Town Meeting. In addition to researchers in the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, we would especially like to meet researchers from other faculties.

The aim of the event is to highlight the vast range of research in progress and to identify potential areas of connectivity. We wish to explore how the Institute can help with new research or advocacy.

The meeting will be held from 2-5pm on 25 February 2009 in Roberts 106, Roberts Building, Malet Place and will be followed by drinks.
