​​​​​​​Slade School of Fine Art celebrates 150th anniversary

From Stanley Spencer and Chila Kumari Burman to Rachel Whiteread and Michael Armitage, ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº's Slade School of Fine Art has educated and trained generations of world-renowned artists since 1871. Ìý

This autumn,Ìýthe SladeÌýwill celebrate 150 years of fine art teaching and research with a varied programme of events thatÌýreflect on the past, showcase the present, and look ahead to the future. Ìý

ÌýTo mark the start ofÌýaÌýyearÌýofÌýcelebrations, Slade is hosting an online event onÌýMonday 4 OctoberÌýthatÌýwill see the launch of the Slade One Fund, aimed at ensuring fair and equal access to, and participation in, art education.Ìý

There will also be an exclusive preview of the trailer for theÌýSlade 150 documentary film,Ìýwhich willÌýtrackÌýkey moments fromÌýthe art school’sÌýhistory, highlighting transformations, firsts, and definitive moments along the way. Through interviews, archives, artworks, and filmography, the documentary will shed light on the Slade’s present through the prism of the past, and look to the future, exploring its role at the vanguard of art research and education. Ìý

CelebrationsÌýwillÌýcontinue withÌýa Slade 150 symposium seriesÌýandÌýpublicÌýexhibitions in the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôºâ€¯Octagon Gallery andÌýtheÌý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Art Museum, where visitorsÌýwill be able toÌýseeÌýa specially produced time map of the names ofÌýallÌýthose who have studied or worked at the Slade since 1871 in a collaborationÌýwith ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº CultureÌýcalledÌýTesting Ground.Ìý

Print Pals: Then and NowÌýis aÌýlimited-editionÌýpublication toÌýmark the anniversaryÌýborne out ofÌýa collaboration between Slade and the National College of the Arts (NCA) in Pakistan at the height of the pandemic.ÌýIt will be produced and printedÌýin both London and LahoreÌýandÌýbe available as an open access PDF available to download.ÌýÌý

The anniversary will culminateÌýin aÌýlandmark eventÌýin the summer of 2022. AllÌýthe activities, along with the launch of the Slade One Fund,Ìýaim to provokeÌýcritical conversations around access, inclusion and the future of art education. Ìý

Slade’s Director, Professor Kieren Reed, said:Ìý

‘It is by reflecting on our multiple histories and learning from how these have informed the present that we can chart our course for the future.ÌýWe hope that our 150th celebrations will involve the entire Slade community in this milestone year. This is also an opportunity to include the public and the whole arts sector, as well asÌýstudentsÌýpast, present and future, in the next chapter of Slade’s story.’ Ìý

SladeÌýSchool of Fine Art at ¹û¶³Ó°ÔºÌýwas foundedÌýin 1871, following a bequest toÌýthe universityÌýfromÌýthe lawyer and collectorÌýFelix Slade.ÌýIt,Ìýhas been a leader in fine art educationÌýever since, fostering innovative, interdisciplinary artistic and art research cultures, and welcoming students from all over the world.Ìý

By offering femaleÌýstudentsÌýeducation on the same terms as men,Ìýthe Slade set the stageÌýforÌý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº to lead Britain inÌýopening upÌýuniversity degrees to women. ItÌýhas continued toÌýinnovate and influence throughout its history, transforming art education, research and practiceÌýnationally and internationally.ÌýÌý
