May 17 is International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

May 17 marks International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), a day to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those with diverse sexual and gender identities.

International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was launched in 2004, to raise awareness of the fact that people across the world still experience violence and discrimination directly because of their diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions or sex characteristics. IDAHOBIT is currently celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 countries where same-sex acts are illegal.Ìý

The theme for this year’s IDAHOBIT is ‘No-one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all’, a call for unity and solidarity in the 75th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.Ìý

It should go without saying that discriminatory behaviour, bullying and harassment will not be tolerated at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and that all our students and staff should be able to bring their whole selves to work without fear of prejudice.Ìý

Students’ Union ±«°ä³¢â€™s provides an opportunity for students self-defining as Trans* to be part of a community of their peers, providing events, support and resources.Ìý

Students’ Union ±«°ä³¢â€™s provides financial assistance for students to purchase items that will make them more comfortable with their gender presentation.ÌýÌý

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Student Support and Wellbeing have listed information and support for LGBTQ+ students, including our policy and guidance for those transitioning gender.Ìý

For staffÌý

±«°ä³¢â€™s LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group is open to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer staff and those interested in promoting LGBTQ+ equality at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº, and also steers the Out@¹û¶³Ó°Ôº staff social network.ÌýÌýÌý

±«°ä³¢â€™s Trans Network is for staff and mature and PhD students at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº who identify as trans (including non-binary, genderqueer and all other identities not identical with the gender assigned at birth).Ìý

The LGBTQ+ STEM networkÌýis forÌýmembers of the LGBTQ+ community allies working in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) discipline.
