Scholarships

Slade Scholarships are awarded by nomination following the entrance exams and interviews.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýBloomfield Scholarships will provide two scholarships per year for five years to enable ten Home students to pursue the BFA Fine Art Undergraduate degree at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need. 
The Bloomfield Scholarships will support the fees and maintenance costs for the duration of their degree, starting in the 23/24 academic year. Each recipient will receive £25,000 in each year of study.  

°Õ³ó±ðÌýEuan Uglow Memorial Scholarship is an entrance scholarship, open to any degree student. The value of the award is £2,000 and is payable in equal instalments at the beginning of each year of the programme.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýGrocers' Company Queen's Golden Jubilee Scholarship is open to UK nationals entering the undergraduate degree programme at the Slade School in alternate years. The value of the scholarship is around £2,000 per year, for the duration of the programme, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Awards are made every four years, beginning in 2018.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýHerbert Seaborn Memorial Scholarship of £1,000 is awarded annually for achievement to an undergraduate or graduate student entering their final year of study.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýJames Lewis Foundation Scholarship will provide 3 scholarships to enable a UK student to pursue an undergraduate BA or BFA in Fine Art. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit and/or financial need.
The James Lewis Foundation Scholarship will support the fees or maintenance costs for the duration of their degree. The first award will be made in the 2022/2023 academic year, and one new scholarship will be awarded each year, with the last new award being made in 2024/2025. The recipient will receive £4,635 in each year of study.  The annual payment will be reviewed on a year-by-year basis in line with the increase in tuition fees.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýNancy Balfour Trust Scholarship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student. The value of the award is £2,500 paid in equal instalments at the beginning of each year of the programme.

The Thomas Scholarship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student. The value of the award is £5,000 paid in equal instalments at the beginning of each year of the programme.

Bursaries

Each year, the Slade Bursary Committee awards a large number of £500 Bursaries, funded by donations from the Friends of the Slade and other benefactors to students with particularly difficult financial circumstances. All students are eligible to apply.

Travel scholarships

The Boise Travel Scholarship is open to students who are in their final year (undergraduate & postgraduate) and are normally resident in the UK. The scholarship is usually worth between £4,000 and £9,000.

The Dolbey Travel Scholarship for up to a maximum of £3,000 is awarded annually to a Slade student in their final year. The selection is carried out by an internal panel with representatives from undergraduate and postgraduate teams.

The Jeanne Szego Travel Award* is awarded to a continuing student and is worth £600 - £1,000. 

Prizes

The Berenice Goodwin Prize of £500 is awarded annually to a graduating student for achievement in performance.

The Cass Arts Prize* is awarded to 3-4 final year undergraduate students for their exemplary work and successful degree show. The prize is worth about £200-250 per student.

The Clare Winsten Memorial Award is for a Slade graduate or graduating UK student to enable them to develop their creative talents. One or two awards of £10,000 are available each year.

The Jeanne Szego Imaginative Use of Colour Prize* is awarded during the degree show and is worth £200.

The Kenneth Armitage Sculpture Prize of £1,000 is awarded to a Slade student periodically by the Kenneth Armitage Foundation for achievement in sculpture. It is for a graduating sculpture student or a continuing graduate sculpture student.

The Max Werner Drawing Prize of £1,000 is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated excellence in drawing.

The Michael Farrell Memorial Prize* is awarded in memory of Mick Farrell, a photography technician at the Slade (2003-2015). His artistic practice negotiated the relationship between photography and sculpture, and developed an experimental approach to process and object. His explorations led him to developing pin hole camera techniques where he eventually worked closely with colleague Cliff Haynes to construct the Straw Camera which gives a unique physical presence to the photograph. £600 is awarded annually to a final year undergraduate student in Fine Art for excellence and innovation in photography and its relationship with form, image and process.

The William Coldstream Prize* of £1,000 is awarded annually in June as a purchase prize for outstanding achievement. Awarded to final year students.

A number of small Sessional Prizes are awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Slade Professor. They include the Alfred W Rich Scholarship; the Henry Tonks Prize, the Prankerd-Jones Memorial Prize; the Slade Prize and the Steer Medal and Prize.

Scholarships

The following Scholarships are awarded by the Slade on the basis of merit and nomination by the entrance examiners following the entrance interviews.  Please note that all eligible applicants will be considered for all of these scholarships – no further application is required unless you are contacted by the Slade and specifically asked to do so.

Graduate Taught entrants: Each year, we are delighted to be able to offer a number of generous MA/MFA studentships for UK students as well as a selection of awards for International students.

The Euan Uglow Memorial Scholarship is an entrance scholarship, open to any degree student. The value of the award is £2,000 and is payable in equal instalments at the beginning of each year of the programme.

The Herbert Seaborn Memorial Scholarship of £1,000 is awarded annually for achievement to an undergraduate or graduate student entering their final year of study.

The Leonora Carrington Scholarship; the Eileen Gray Scholarship; the Yitzhak Danziger Scholarship. These awards are entrance scholarships open to Overseas students. Each award provides £3750 towards the Overseas fees in each year of study of the MA or MFA programme. One award is available in each area (Fine Art Media, Painting and Sculpture).

The Nancy Balfour Trust Scholarship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student. The value of the award is £2,500 paid in equal instalments at the beginning of each year of the programme.

The Sarabande Foundation Scholarship offers Full UK fees and £16,000 maintenance (£44,200 at 2024/25 fee rate) to MA or MFA offer holders for 24/25 and 25/26 academic year. The Scholarships will be open to all students on the MA or MFA, regardless of their fee status, and will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Each scholarship will provide fees support each year at a rate equivalent to the UK fees for that year (regardless of the recipient fee status). For 24/25 the fees are confirmed at £14,100 and will likely rise each year with inflation. Each recipient will also receive a total of £16,000 (over their 2 years of study) to cover their maintenance. Therefore, the approximate value of each award will be £44,200.

Prizes

The Adrian Carruthers Memorial Award* is a partnership between Acme and the Slade, generously supported by the Adrian Carruthers Memorial Fund in memory of Adrian, a Slade student who died young. This award was instigated by Adrian Carruthers’ family with the goal of providing a bridge between college and professional practice for MA/MFA graduates from Slade School of Fine Art. The award includes a bursary, rent-free studio space (from January the following year) and mentoring programme tailored specifically to the graduate’s practice.

°Õ³ó±ðÌýAlmacantar Studio Award*. Property Investment Firm, Almacantar, have a dedication to provide three recent art studying graduates (1x Goldsmiths, 1x Slade and 1x RA) with a free studio for a year, every year at their Royal Albert Wharf studios in the Royal Docks, East London, as well as a £1,000 cash prize. The studio residency runs for just short of 12 months starting in August.

The winner must be eligible to stay in the UK for the duration of the studio residency.
They also offer a £1,000 cash prize to a runner-up student.

The Barto Dos Santos Memorial Award* of £5,000 is for outstanding achievement by a final year graduate student.
The donor is Max Werner.

The Berenice Goodwin Prize of £500 is awarded annually to a graduating student for achievement in performance.

The Cass Arts Prize* is awarded to 3-4 final year graduate students for their exemplary work and successful degree show. The prize is worth about £200-250 per student.

The Chadwell Award* is an annual competition for final year Fine Art postgraduates. It aims to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice by giving a recent painting graduate a free studio in Bow, East London for one year together with a bursary of £5000.  Different institutions are targeted each year including the Slade.

The Chelsea Arts Club Roboz Scholarship of £2,000 is made for the first time in September 2018 to a continuing MA or MFA student to help them with the cost of their studies and materials in their final year. The Award also includes one year's membership of the Chelsea Arts Club. This award covers the Home tuition fee.

The Desiree Painting Prize* is awarded during the degree show and is worth £200.

The Jeanne Szego Imaginative Use of Colour Prize* is awarded during the degree show and is worth £200.

The Julia Wood Prize for Excellent Use of Space of £100 is awarded in recognition of excellence in articulating spatial constructs.

The Julian Sullivan Award of £500 is awarded annually in June for achievement in fine art media.

The Kenneth Armitage Sculpture Prize* of £1,000 is awarded to a Slade student periodically by the Kenneth Armitage Foundation for achievement in sculpture. It is for a graduating sculpture student or a continuing graduate sculpture student.

The Max Werner Drawing Prize* of £1,000 is awarded annually to a student who has demonstrated excellence in drawing.

The Olive* is awarded to a 2nd year student in MA/MFA Painting upon graduation in recognition of their spirit of experimentation.

The Slade is invited to nominate candidates for the annual Red Mansion Art Prize. The prize is a residency in China for a continuing graduate student.

The Terence Cuneo Memorial Trust prize is usually offered to a graduate student entering their final year, with an interest in painting. The award is worth £1000. The gift is memory of Slade alumnus, Terence Cuneo.

The William Coldstream Prize* of £1,000 is awarded annually in June as a purchase prize for outstanding achievement.

The Wolfgang Spoerl Scholarship -one award is available each year for a student completing the first year MA or MFA Fine Art (Home or International), whose work has a primary focus in print making. The award, to be paid at the start of the student’s second year, is worth £8500.00 and may be used either as a contribution to tuition fees or living costs. It is given by the Amar-Franses & Foster-Jenkins Trust in memory of Wolfgang Spoerl.

LAHP Studentships

The Slade is part of the AHRC-funded London Arts and Humanities Partnership which brings together eight leading UK research organisations: ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº), King’s College London, London School of Economics & Political Science, Queen Mary University of London, Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, Royal College of Art, Royal College of Music, and the School of Advanced Study. The LAHP has up to 90 studentships per year available for postgraduate research students studying arts and humanities disciplines. These studentships, which normally cover fees and maintenance allowance (stipend), are available to UK and overseas students. As well as funding for studentships and shared doctoral training, this will open up additional opportunities for interdisciplinary supervision for Slade students across these eight leading research institutions. ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Graduate Research Scholarships

¹û¶³Ó°Ôº offers up to 25 Graduate Research Scholarships annually to prospective and current ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº students from any country. Applicants are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and research potential. These studentships normally cover fees and maintenance allowance (stipend).

Bursaries

Jean Spencer and Malcolm Hughes Bursaries are available each year for MPhil/PhD students to enable them to further their research through projects, conferences, travel, or other research activities. The maximum size of any bursary is £500 and applications for smaller awards are encouraged. There are two deadlines per academic year and applications are considered at the Slade Doctoral Board.
