About this talk:

The challenges we face have rarely been greater or more complex. Overcoming them will require fundamental reform of our current systems of governance. But, 2024 presents us with a rare opportunity: a potential change of UK administration could trigger a radical shift in the way government is structured and delivered.

Mission-driven government offers a new approach, galvanising action and energy from across sectors and across society to set the UK on a path towards a growing, inclusive and sustainable economy.

This event will mark the launch ofÌýMission Critical,Ìýa new reportÌýwritten byÌýCllr Georgia Gould, Leader of the London Borough of Camden, andÌýProfessor Mariana Mazzucato, Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº and Founding Director of theÌý¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, looking at the future of mission driven governance in the UK.

This project, advanced by IIPP in partnership with , builds on IIPP’s extensive work on mission-oriented innovation and industrial strategy over the past six years - notably, Professor Mazzucato’s internationally renowned 2021 bookÌýÌýand IIPP’s subsequent work to translate the theory of mission-oriented policy into practice with government partners around the world. It also draws from the deep, practical experience of the London Borough of Camden in translating a mission-oriented strategy into practice.

We'll be discussing how a mission-driven government canÌýlead with purpose, and govern in partnershipÌýin a new model of statecraft.

Mariana Mazzucato

Founding Director and Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)

Mariana Mazzucato
Mariana Mazzucato (PhD) is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº (¹û¶³Ó°Ôº), where she is founding director of the ¹û¶³Ó°Ôº Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. She has won international prizes including theÌýGrande Ufficiale Ordine al Merito della Repubblica ItalianaÌýin 2021, Italy's highest civilian honour, theÌý, the 2019Ìý, and the 2018ÌýLeontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. Most recently, Pope Francis appointed her to the Pontifical Academy for Life for bringing ‘more humanity’ to the world.Ìý

Professor Mazzucato is the author of four highly-acclaimed books:ÌýÌý(2013),ÌýÌý(2018),ÌýÌý(2021) andÌýÌý(2023).Ìý

She advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable growth. Her current roles include being Chair of theÌý, Co-Chair of theÌý, Co-Chair on theÌý, and a member of theÌý

Georgia Gould

Georgia Gould
Georgia was appointed Leader of Camden Council in May 2017 and has served as a Councillor for Kentish Town Ward since 2010. Born and bred in Camden, Georgia studied at Camden School for Girls and has lived in the Borough for most of her adult life. Interested in politics at a young age, Georgia went on to study Politics and History at Oxford, and then graduated with a master's degree in global politics from the LSE.

Georgia has a particular interest in youth politics and published a book called Wasted: How Misunderstanding Young Britain Threatens Our Future. Georgia helped found Camden’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Commission, designed to understand the future skills market and link them strongly with schools and Further Education, guaranteeing opportunities for young people to make sure they can meet with their talent and creativity. Outside of her Council work, Georgia is an avid QPR fan

Helen MacNamara

Helen MacNamara CB was Chief Policy and Corporate Affairs Officer at the Premier League, a role she began in May 2021.

Prior to that she was the Deputy Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Cabinet Secretariat until February 2021. She was responsible for the management of the Cabinet Secretariat including advising on the operation of the Cabinet and collective government, machinery of government, the Codes and Cabinet Manual; propriety and ethics, the Independent Offices and public appointments and public bodies.

Helen was previously Director General for Housing and Planning (from 2016 to 2018), responsible for government policy on housing including £25 billion of investment, the Homes and Communities Agency, the Planning Inspectorate and the planning system. Before this, she was Director of the Economic and Domestic Secretariat in the Cabinet Office (from 2013 to 2016), responsible for coordinating government preparations for the 2015 General Election.

Helen worked in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport from 2002 to 2013, working on the Olympic bid and planning for the staging of the 2012 Games. She also worked as Principal Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell and as Director for Media Policy, responsible for setting up the Leveson Inquiry and the subsequent cross-party response.

She spent the early part of her career working in the digital and creative industries after studying history at Clare College, Cambridge. In 2011 she was on Management Today’s list of 35 women leaders under 35 and the 50 women to watch working in the cultural sector. She was a trustee of Target Ovarian Cancer 2008 to 2013 and was a Governor of Goldsmiths College, London. She was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 2021.

Kamal Ahmed
One of the UK’s leading media executives,ÌýKamalÌýAhmed is an award winning journalist and author and has led major teams across BBC News, The Telegraph, The Guardian and The Observer. In 2021 he co-founded The News Movement, a new media business providing trusted news for Gen Z audiences.

ÌýHe is now Director of Audio, presenter of the Daily T podcast and columnist at The Telegraph.
