Our annual Careers Week will run from 5-9 June 2023. Find out about the sessions below. We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to the Department of Political Science Careers Week 2023!听

Two years ago we launched the first ever Department of Political Science Careers Week in which we brought together a host of alumni, inspirational speakers and skills workshops to try to reinvigorate our vision of the many ways your studies in political science can contribute to the brighter future we seek.听听听

Since then we have had thousands of students participate and we are excited to bring you more this year.听听听

Responding to feedback over the last two years, this year we are bringing you lots of alumni panels and workshops run by former 果冻影院 students, deep-dives into industries and some really interesting speakers.听

This year, inspired by Robert Frost鈥檚 famous line 鈥淚 took the road less travelled,鈥 we are showcasing alumni whose career paths took unexpected turns.听 Some even working in positions that were literally not invented when they graduated.听 As new and emerging technologies provide opportunities we many not have even imagined, these are exciting times to build a careers.听

Join us on this journey and discover new ideas and avenues that you may not have previously considered, learn about the many places for your talents in the marketplace, and build the skills to march forward into that marketplace confidently.听

Most employers spend less than 10 seconds looking at a CV.听 How can you make sure that yours stands out?听 How do you know what an employer looks for 鈥 and what does AI screen for?听 The trick is to understand the recruiter鈥檚 perspective.听 This session will help you understand how to use a job description to design a well-structured, interesting CV that showcases your experience in the most impactful and attractive way possible.听听听

Holly Chate is the Chief Operating Officer at FutureDotNow, a charity uniting businesses to tackle the gap in digital capability and confidence in the UK. Holly is experienced in strategy and business development, operating model transformation, programme management, governance, and post-merger integration. Holly has worked across public, private and third sector and internationally in the Middle East, Asia and Europe through her roles at Deloitte (2012-2021) and BAE Systems (2006-2012). Holly has a degree in Biochemistry from 果冻影院.

Reading the Signs for the Future with Former US Presidential Advisor Hon Dr Pippa Malmgrem

Join us for a unique and exciting fireside chat with the Hon. Dr Pippa Malmgren, an economist who makes sense or the world economy by writing books, by founding tech businesses, by advising policymakers around the world and through public speaking and teaching. Dr Malmgren served President George W. Bush in the White House as Special Assistant to the President and on听The National Economic Council. She was responsible for financial market issues and handled Enron and Sarbanes Oxley. She served on the President's Working Group on Corporate Governance and The President's Working Group on Financial Markets. After 9/11 she was also responsible for assessing Terrorism Risks to the Economy and technology as a source of geopolitical competitiveness.

Her most recent bestseller, The Infinite Leader, won the International Press Award for the Best Book on Leadership for 2021. Her previous book, The Leadership Lab, was named Business Book of the Year and Best Book on Leadership in 2019 and won the International Press Award 2020 and the NYC Library Big Apple Award. She is also the author of: Geopolitics for Investors (2015) and Signals: How Everyday Signs Help Us Navigate the World's Turbulent Economy a crowd-funded Amazon best-seller (2016).

She has been named one of the Fifty Top Inspiring Women in the UK and one of the Top 100in Tech by @WATC_WeAreTech and longlisted by Computer Weekly as a Most Influential Women inTech for 2019, 2020 and 2021. She serves as a judge on The Queen's Enterprise Business Awards andwas a member of the Board of Directors for The Department for International Trade in the UK from 2017-2019. She is a Senior Associate Fellow of RUSI. She is also an advisor to the BSA Huxley Summit

Got an interview coming up?听 Feeling nervous or wondering how you can improve your technique?听 In this interactive session we鈥檒l take an in-depth look at what recruiters really look for, and how you can prepare really well so that you feel as calm and confident as possible on the day.听听 Using a job description we鈥檒l analyse the questions you鈥檙e likely to be asked and start to prepare some answers to motivational and competency questions.听 We will also give you a chance to practice your interview technique and get some feedback.听听 Bring your most difficult and dreaded interview questions and let鈥檚 discuss how to tackle them!听

Management consultancy is a popular career choice for Political Science students, but what does it take to get into the industry?听 In this session careers coach and ex-management consultant Agne Rimkute will discuss: what鈥檚 it really like to work in the field? What are the current industry trends?听 Who are the main players (large and small)?听 What do recruiters look for and what can you expect from the recruitment process 鈥 including the case interview?听听听

Alumni Panel: Working in Tech

The session will focus on the main functions of the public policy area in tech companies, regulatory challenges and trends in artificial intelligence, digital policy and connectivity. Hear from two 果冻影院 Alumni, Daniel (2020), Thresea (2021)听and Cristobal (2018)听who will delve into their own career path since graduating.听

Daniel is a Policy Manager for International听Policy and Trade at techUK, where he works on helping tech companies based in the UK expand abroad and deal with international tech regulation. Daniel also organizes a number of bilateral tech forums, including UK-Japan, UK-APAC, UK-India and UK-China. He previously worked in tech and public affairs, and graduated from 果冻影院 in 2020 from MSc International Public Policy.

Theresa began her career at the German development agency GIZ, actively contributing to the rapid digitization of development and economic cooperation amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.She further pursued her passion for tech-for-good by completing a master鈥檚 degree in international public policy, specializing in tech policy at 果冻影院. Subsequently, she worked as a cyber threat intelligence researcher at Protection Group International and Control Risks. There, her role involved analysing the patterns of online extremism and providing guidance to clients regarding potential threats to their businesses. In 2022, Theresa joined Global Counsel, assuming the dual responsibilities of a tech policy and business development associate. She leads on UK cyber policy issues while also engaging with prominent multinational tech companies on matters related to data, AI, and government digitisation. In her business development capacity, Theresa strives to expand Global Counsel's network and influence, fostering the growth of the organization.

Crist贸bal is Amazon's Public Policy Manager for Latin America where he leads the digital policy area for the region. Previously he served as General Manager for the Chilean Airline Association, as Public Affairs Manager for the American Chamber of Commerce and in the office of the President in the Chilean government. He is a Political Scientist, Master in Strategic Communication and Msc in Public Policy from 果冻影院 (gen 2018). Additionally, he is a lecturer of public policy and agenda setting

Closing Keynote: "The Road Less Travelled: From Science to Diplomacy" in conversation with Antonella Di Trapani.听

Dr Antonella di Trapani is Senior Analyst at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) where she is leading the Nuclear Education, Skills and Technology (NEST) Framework, the Global Forum on nuclear education, science, technology, and policy and the Nuclear Knowledge Management activities.听Before joining the OECD NEA in July 2018, she was Team Leader for Science Policy Advice within the European Commission鈥檚 Scientific Advice Mechanism. Prior to that, she has held several positions as Programme Manager and Head of International Cooperation, at the G20 Wheat Initiative, European Commission European Research Council and European Science Foundation, managing large scale collaborative projects, capacity building networks and the largest grants in Europe.听

She is, among others, Advisory Board member of the IAEA Technical Working Groups on Human Resources Development and Knowledge Management, European Commission European Human Resources Observatory in Nuclear, and lately nominated to the Advisory Board of the 果冻影院 Bachelor Degree on Science and Technology for Social Change. She is member of several Programme Committees and invited as key-note panel speaker in international conferences. She has been nominated as expert on Science Diplomacy for nuclear challenges for the Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) new course on 鈥Introduction to science and tech diplomacy the new geopolitics of technology鈥欌

Max has worked in Public Policy for 15 years - most recently as Director of the Internet Policy Unit at the Tony Blair Institute. He led a global team generating radical, sensible, progressive tech policy to address some of the biggest challenges and opportunities faced by countries around the world. He was previously Head of Digital Policy at Sky and started his career at the UK communications regulator Ofcom on infrastructure, communications and media policy.

Inside the Heart of Politics. A听"Day听in the Life" of听Dan Sleat.

Join us for a special "day in the life" conversation with Dan Sleat who worked in Parliament as Rt Hon Jack Straw鈥檚 adviser for five years. Previously he鈥檇 been working on David Miliband鈥檚 2010 leadership campaign. This session is poised to be insightful as we unpack what it was like to work at the centre of working politics and government.

Dan is now currently a Senior Policy Adviser on Geopolitics at the Tony Blair Institute (TBI). He has been at TBI for eight years and before moving into his role in Geopolitics he was Director of Research and before that Sir Tony鈥檚 Special Adviser for four years

Explainer: Careers in the UN听听

The UN is notoriously popular as a target destination for many of our graduates.听 It鈥檚 also notoriously difficult to get into.听 In this session, 果冻影院 Careers Consultant Penny Longman provides a detailed insight into the UN funds and programmes and looks at different routes into some of the agencies.听 We鈥檒l also cover skills and experience, tips for writing an outstanding application and general advice about getting into an international organisation.听

Workshop: 鈥楢 Day in the Life鈥 of a Security Program Manager at Amazon.听听

Are you studying/ interested in Security Policy? Do you sometimes think what can I do with my degree? Then join us as former 果冻影院 alumni Christian Sintoni will be running a 'day in the life' workshop to highlight his role as a Security Program Manager at Amazon, introducing us to interconnection with other stakeholders in the company, his input in the launch of new sites across EMEA, and the variety of teams within the Global Security Organisation.听

Christian Sintoni is originally Italian, but has lived in various parts of the world. He graduated with a Law LLB from King's College London in 2020, followed by an MSc in Security Studies at the 果冻影院 School of Political Science. During his time at 果冻影院, Christian was particularly interested in the role of intelligence analysis in global conflicts. Currently, Christian works within Amazon's Global Security Organisation, which helps protect Amazon's people, assets and information.听

Alumni Panel: Pathways to Working in Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG)

Join us for a panel discussion as we talk to two 果冻影院 alumni about their journey to working in ESG. We will unpack how the degree's they chose brought them through different sectors and the skills that they needed to apply in order to get where they are. Joining the panel is Tessa Gough-Allen (2020) and Anita Punwani.听

Tessa is a Senior Consultant at Camarco, working in a fast-growing ESG communications advisory team advising clients in the energy, resources, financial services, industrial, real estate, professional services and support services sector. Prior to that Tessa worked in financial communications advising energy, resource and sustainable economy companies on their financial communications, investor relations and crisis communications. Tessa has an MA in Human Rights from 果冻影院 and a BA Hons in History of Art from the University of Leeds.

Anita is a governance professional with over 30 years鈥 experience spanning the not-for-profit, private and public sectors. She advised senior UK government officials on the legacy benefits and adequacy of the 拢9.3 billion investment in the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Child safeguarding has been an important aspect of her work both in the public and not-for-profit sectors. She is a member of the Institute of Risk Management, UNA UK and Chatham House. Anita holds degrees in engineering, management, economics and a MSc in Global Governance & Ethics from 果冻影院.

Alumni Panel: Working in Regulation听

Thinking about a career in regulation? Want to know more what it entails to work in the sector? Are you not sure what regulation is? Then look no further, this alumni panel will guide you through the doubts! Join Jenna Omassi and Elise Soucie two former 果冻影院 students as they tell us their story.听

Elise is an associate director in AFME's technology and Operations division. She leads the division's Digital Assets and Data Strategy work, with a focus on emerging regulation such as the Market in Crypto assists (MiCA) regulation, the Data Act, Open Fiannce legislation and HMT Future Framework for Cryptoassets. Prior to her work at AFME Elise worked at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in both听their Technology, Resilience department, she was named 'Next generation Leader of the Year' at the 2022 Women in Finance听Awards UK.听

Jenna Omassi is currently an International Policy Manager at Ofcom, the UK鈥檚 communications regulator. In this role, Jenna manages Ofcom鈥檚 international engagement on online safety issues with regulators, legislators, governments and civil society around the world.听Jenna is Canadian and started her career working for the University of British Columbia in strategic planning and policy. She earned a MSc in Security Studies at 果冻影院, after which she held a few different roles at the Canadian High Commission to the UK before joining Ofcom.听

Political Risk Workshop with Charles Hecker听

Have you heard of political risk analysts and wondered what they do? Have you always dreamed of becoming a political risk analyst and want to see if it鈥檚 for you? Have you never heard of political risk consulting, but now you are curious? Then join us for a special case study workshop designed and run by Charles Hecker of Control Risks, to introduce you to how to approach a challenge that you might be set in a day in the life of a political risk analyst.

Charles Hecker is a partner at Control Risks. Charles has worked there for more than 20 years; eight of those were spent as the managing partner of the company鈥檚 Moscow office. He has an undergraduate degree in Soviet Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters Degree from the Russian Research Center, now called the Davis Center, at Harvard University.听

Please note that priority for this workshop will be given to current MA/MSc students.

A strong Linkedin profile puts you at a huge advantage in the job market. 听Recruiters can find you, employers can see how you present yourself professionally, and you can use it to make new professional contacts fast. 听In fact, being active on Linkedin is now a 鈥渕ust-have鈥 rather than a 鈥渘ice to have鈥 in job-hunting. 听In this session we鈥檒l review what makes a great profile, looking at a variety of examples so that you can see what really works. 听You will have an opportunity to work on your own profile and get feedback from others. 听听

European Diplomatic Careers: Working in the EU institutions; Working on Europe in the UK Civil Service 听

This session will provide an insight into European diplomatic careers, both in the EU institutions and the UK civil service. Diplomats Marit Sillavee (First Secretary, Citizens, Social and Justice and Home Affairs Section, EU Delegation to the UK) and Caitlin Griffith, (Senior Communications and Engagement Officer on the EU/Windsor Framework at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office) will share insights including:听

  • 听An overview of their career trajectories up to now/how they got to where they are 听听
  • Reflections on the skills they have needed to succeed 听听
  • 听What an average 鈥榙ay in a life鈥 looks like for them 听听
  • Practical details about 鈥榬outes in鈥 to working for both the EU institutions and the UK civil service 听

Marit Sillavee, is an EU diplomat with over 15 years of professional experience in communications and outreach, public relations and political communication, capability building and stakeholder engagement in London, Brussels and Tallinn. She is currently working on EU citizens鈥 rights issues at the EU Delegation in the UK, bringing together EU Member States and NGOs representing EU citizens in the UK, and coordinating the relationship with the relevant counterparts in the UK Government and both Houses of Parliament. Before joining the Commission, she worked in London for a reputation management consultancy advising FTSE 100 companies on reputation management, stakeholder engagement and leadership development, running workshops and helping companies to collect measurable data on their reputation among their key stakeholders. She obtained her Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Journalism and Public Relations from the University of Tartu in Estonia and she also holds a MSc in Communication Regulation and Policy from the London School of Economics. She spent 6 months in Beijing learning Mandarin which she found easier to learn than French.听

Caitlin Griffith, is a Senior Communications and Engagement Officer in the EU Directorate at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, where she has worked for over a year on media and strategic communications across the breadth of the UK鈥檚 relationship with the EU, including the Northern Ireland Protocol and Windsor Framework. Prior to joining FCDO, Caitlin was a Press Officer in the Cabinet Office for 18 months working on Covid Communications during the height of the pandemic.鈥

She joined the Civil Service after completing an MA in Gender Studies at 果冻影院 in 2020, where she focused her research on gender policy in financial organisations and was awarded a place on the Dean鈥檚 List. 鈥

Alumni Panel: EU Careers, Building a Career in Brussels 听

  • Krisztina Z谩lnoky, Research Project Manager (CISL) | Co-founder of V4SDG | WEF Global Shaper
    • Krisztina is a Research Project Manager in the CISL Europe office. Prior to joining the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Krisztina worked at the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission and completed internships at the UNICEF Hungarian Committee and the U.S. Commercial Service in Hungary. She gained experience in the private sector, working as an analyst at KPMG on projects related to the Common Agricultural Policy. Krisztina studied International Relations with a specialisation in European integration at Corvinus University Budapest and holds an MSc in Public Policy from 果冻影院. Her master dissertation focused on the impact of the 2008-2009 financial crisis on democracy support in Central and Eastern Europe. Krisztina is part of the Global Shapers Brussels Hub.
  • Owen Morgan, Blue Book Trainee, EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement, EU Commission (remote)听
    • Owen Morgan graduated from 果冻影院 with a BA in Italian and Spanish in 2020. After graduation, he relocated to Brussels and began working in EU public affairs. He later pursued an MA in European Political and Governance studies at the College of Europe. Since 2022, Owen has been employed at the European Commission, initially focusing on the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement and the Windsor Framework. Presently, he holds the position of Speechwriter to two European Commissioners.听
  • Vanda Suha, Policy Assistant, DG Trade, European Commission
    • Originally from Budapest, Hungary, Vanda Suha works the European Commission where she is responsible for trade and climate in DG TRADE.听 In 2016, she moved to London for a BA in International Relations. During her undergraduate degree, she studied abroad in Washington D.C. for a semester. After finishing her degree in 2019, she stayed in London for an MSc in Security Studies at 果冻影院 (2019-2020). Following graduation, she moved to Brussels, Belgium, where she did the Blue Book Traineeship at the European Commission and worked as a consultant in the sustainability/digital fields before taking up her current role. Vanda is also co-leading the 果冻影院 alumni group in Brussels.

Fed up with spending hours crafting your application and CV only to hear nothing back from the employer? 听Then it鈥檚 time to change your approach. 听In this session we鈥檒l be looking at a PROVEN and simple methodology for using informational interviews to dramatically increase your access to job opportunities and information. 听This session builds on the Linkedin session earlier in the day, and is specially designed for people who hate networking! 听听

Explainer Workshop: Careers in the Law for Non-lawyers听

Interested in a career in the law but not sure how to get in without a law degree? 听Law firms hire 50% of their graduates from non-law degrees, but understanding the recruitment path and the skills and experience required is critical. 听In this session, Faculty of Laws Careers Consultant Stephen Gurman will explain how the recruitment process works, experience and skills required, what recruiters look for and how you can best position yourself to make an outstanding application. 听

Ever wondered what a day in civil service would entail? Are you confused about the application process? Then join us for this workshop as two 果冻影院 alumni walk you through their day to day lives, how they got to where they are now and the skills they used along the way.听

Billal Mallik graduated from 果冻影院 in 2017 with a BA in Education Studies and an MSc in Disasters, Adaptation and Development from King's College London in 2020. Bilal has a varied career to date, and worked at an international school in Switzerland, humanitarian programmes at Christian Aid, and transport policy at the Department for Transport before joining the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

A "Day in the Life" of a Political Campaigner: A Workshop with Fizza Quereshi

Have you always wondered how political campaigners operate in the way that they do? Have you always dreamed of working in campaigning and want to see if it鈥檚 for you? Then join us for a special case study workshop designed and run by 听Fizza Qureshi of Migrants鈥 Rights Network, to introduce you to how to approach a challenge that you might be set in a day in the life of a political campaigner.

"Migration is never out of the public domain, and is unlikely to be so. It means our work at the requires rapid reactions to new or emerging immigration policies, or inflammatory and harmful comments. We have to navigate this whilst staying a values-led organisation, taking an intersectional approach to its work, and striving for systemic change. If you want to know how we achieve this and ensure those with lived experience are front and centre please join me for a 鈥榙ay in the life of a campaigning鈥 organisation".听

Fizza Qureshi is the CEO of the Migrants鈥 Rights Network, and has been leading the organisation since 2017. She studied Biotechnology at 果冻影院 (1998-2001), and after working in the laboratory realised her true passion lay in challenging human rights injustices. She completed an MA in Human Rights and Social Change at another London university, before embarking on a new career in the third sector. Fizza has held roles at the Institute of Race Relations, Doctors of the World UK and Terrence Higgins Trust. She is currently the Co-Chair of the3million, a director of Migrants at Work and an honorary advisory member of the Black Europeans.

Are you curious about think tanks? What are they? What do they do? Are they apart of the government? Do you have to be academic? Well this panel discussion will explore the world of think tanks, answer your questions and provide answers to how you can make a career working for a think tank.听

Joining us for this panel is Isabella听Wilkinson. Isabella is a research associate in the International Security programme at Chatham House and part of the editorial team for the Journal of Cyber Policy. Isabella specialises in cyber policy and how societies can build resilience to cyber threats.听听She is also part of the Leadership Team for Women in International Security UK.听Isabella has research experience at the intersection between democratic governance and technology policy. She has a master鈥檚 degree in Democracy and Governance from Georgetown University and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in History and International Relations from the London School of Economics.

David听Hamon听is a specialist in the impact of activism on business and government, with experience advising companies from highly exposed industries across a range of core sustainability issues. Leading the research department at SIGWATCH, he helps clients understand how activism drives change in society, how it affects the operating environment of business, and how constructive engagement can enable industry to prepare for the future, turning risk into opportunity. David studied Philosophy and Literature at Friedrich-Alexander University in Nuremberg, Germany, before completing an MSc in International Public Policy at 果冻影院.

Be sure to bring plenty of questions as we unpack how these former 果冻影院 graduates got to where they are now, the skills they used along the way as well as some tips and tricks for making it into the sector.听

  • Dan Babinski, Geographic Information Systems Specialist for Tetra Tech.听

    • Dan听听focuses on operational data and reporting for humanitarian mine action programs. I have previous experience with the International Committee of the Red Cross, World Bank, and the New Zealand Defence Force. He听holds a MRes Risk and Disaster Reduction from 果冻影院听.听

  • Rafeef Abdelrazek, Program Leader for Sustainable Development for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

    • Rafeef is the Program Leader for Sustainable Development coordinating the Bank鈥檚 portfolio for the GCC in the sectors of: (i) urban, land, resilience, (ii) water, (iii) environment, (iv) social, and (v) agriculture. Prior to that she was a Senior Urban Specialist with the World Bank Group鈥檚 Urban, Resilience, and Land Global Practice. Rafeef has 20 years of operational experience in the development sector and has led the preparation and implementation of multiple projects and analytical work as well as policy dialogue concentrating on integrated spatial planning, urban and rural service delivery including solid waste management, metropolitan and municipal management, cross-jurisdictional coordination, and land administration. She has aimed to include the lenses of DRM and resilience and gender and women鈥檚 land rights into activities she engages in. Prior to joining the Bank, Rafeef worked on a series of USAID development projects focusing on accelerating sustainable economic growth including in the tourism and agri-business sectors, as well as local regeneration and development and educational infrastructure. Rafeef has a master鈥檚 degree in Building and Urban Design in Development from 果冻影院鈥檚 Bartlett-Development Planning Unit, and an undergraduate degree in International Financial Management from Villanova University in the United States.
