果冻影院 Student Support and Wellbeing (including Student Psychological and Counselling Services) are not able to provide any kind of emergency or crisis support. Please refer to our webpage on urgent and out of hours support for a list of essential contacts.

Specific mental health difficulties

Support is available for a wide range of mental health difficulties that you may be experiencing during your time at 果冻影院.

Anxiety and worry

Anxiety is a normal response to situations that we perceive as threatening to us. We all experience anxiety now and again. In some situations,听anxiety can be helpful, such as when we need to perform well听or cope with an emergency.听For example, it鈥檚 completely expected听to feel anxious if you had to take an exam or go to hospital for surgery.听

However, anxiety can begin to have a negative impact on your life should it develop further. Some people will be diagnosed with an anxiety-related mental health condition听such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, where specific treatment and support is available.

Common ways that anxiety can manifest include, but are not limited to:听

  • Heart pounding, racing, skipping a beat听
  • Headaches; feeling dizzy or light-headed听
  • Chest tightness or pain听
  • Overeating听or loss of appetite听
  • Feeling restless, fidgety or shaky听

Closely linked to stress,听you may be听constantly on the go听and feel like you have little time to look after yourself.听You may听avoid听social situations听or use smoking and drinking to cope with them.听Your flat mates and peers may notice that you are being irritable or snappy with them.听You may see an increase in compulsive behaviours such as听persistent鈥痮vereating, skin picking,听washing听or checking鈥痶hings.听

Depression and low mood

Depression is a common mental health issue where you may feel low due to personal life stresses, including bereavement, financial, housing or relationship difficulties, losing a job or having trouble at work or university.听In its mildest form,听depression does not stop us from leading a normal life.

However,听long periods of low mood and moderate to severe depression can be听extremely distressing听and have a very significant impact on your quality of life. In some cases, severe depression can trigger thoughts of听death and suicide.

Common signs or symptoms include, but are not limited to:听

  • Tiredness听and听lack of energy, or restlessness听
  • Difficulty falling asleep at night or waking up early in the听morning听
  • Changes in weight, appetite and听eating听
  • Low self-esteem and confidence听
  • Lasting feelings of sadness, guilt, numbness or hopelessness听
  • Feeling alone even when in company听
  • Thoughts of suicide听

During your time at university, you may find that you don't enjoy socialising and hobbies like you used to. You may withdraw听from friends and family members, and taking care of yourself becomes increasingly difficult. Maybe you are not turning up to lectures,听frequently missing听assessment听deadlines听and not answering your emails.听If you feel depressed, you may feel negative towards yourself, the world and about the future.

Alcohol or drug misuse and addiction

If听you or someone you know is in immediate danger of hurting yourself or others:听

  • Go directly to the听Accident & Emergency (A&E)听department of听听to get help
  • 听is the nearest A&E department to 果冻影院鈥檚听main campus听
  • 颁补濒濒听999听to request an ambulance if you are unable to reach the hospital听yourself听

Addiction is a serious mental health condition that can听impact your physical and mental health, as well as social relationships, family, work,听university听and quality of life. You may use drugs, alcohol, nicotine, solvents or food as coping mechanisms听to help you get through difficult times, but the feelings of relief are only temporary.

When your problems don't disappear, you may use more and more of a certain substance and become physically and/or psychologically dependent on it.

Dependency and tolerance to substances or addictive behaviours can further complications, such as:

  • Serious damage to organs, such as the heart, brain, and liver听听
  • Diseases, such as heart disease, HIV, and cancer听
  • Trembling hands, tingling fingers, painful nerves听
  • Memory loss听
  • Aggressive irrational听behaviour (such as arguments or听violence听
  • Long-term mental health problems, such as depression听and anxiety)

If you have become dependent and need to stop drinking or taking drugs completely, stopping overnight is highly dangerous. You should speak to your GP to find out if you need听medicine or treatment to detox safely.

Eating disorders, body image and weight听

An eating disorder is听not a lifestyle choice or 鈥減hase鈥.听It is听a听serious mental health condition that听can听involve extreme concerns about eating, body weight, body shape or disordered eating.

The eating disorders we might hear about or experience ourselves鈥痠nclude听anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)听and other specified feeding or eating disorder听(OSFED). Contemporary research shows that eating disorders most commonly begin during .

Symptoms associated with eating disorders include:听

  • Thinking听and/or worrying听about food all the time听
  • Frequently checking or avoiding completely听body shape and weight听
  • Dieting, counting听calories听
  • Excessive exercise听regimes听
  • Missing meals, eating alone, eating very slowly听
  • Comfort eating, feeling guilty after听eating听
  • Weight loss, frequent changes in weight听
  • Missed menstrual听periods听
  • Vomiting; frequent trips to the bathroom during or shortly after meals听

These symptoms can negatively impact your university experience, mental wellbeing and physical health.听You may find yourself avoiding social situations with your flat mates or peers, becoming听more withdrawn听and feeling anxious or depressed.
